Wind Damage
Alpharetta Roofer
Common reasons for damage
- Poor installation
- Strong winds
- Defective sealant
Typically strong windstorms are the main cause of damage. Roofs can usually stand strong winds, but the more severe gusts are, the more likely uplift can occur and loosen or blow off shingles. Then the real problem is with water damage after the roof becomes exposed to the elements. Wind can create missing or torn shingles or fallen limbs that have punctured holes in flashing. Any missing or torn shingles can allow water to get into the plywood decking underneath the shingles and through nail holes.

Leaks from missing shingles can worsen if they aren’t taken care of soon after because the plywood, nails and attic space being exposed to moisture will slowly rot wood, rust fasteners, encourage the growth of mildew and create escalating problems.
The age, pitch and design can affect how your roof weathers a storm. However, if a roofer installed shingling incorrectly or cut corners to get the job done by not placing enough nails or not placing them properly, the wind could more easily remove them. Or a manufacturer’s defect in shingles may have put too much or not enough adhesive to the shingles so that when they naturally adhere from the heat of day, they don’t properly seal themselves and are able to be lifted up by wind, weakening and eventually breaking them off.
Safely check your roof for damage after a storm
- Loose portions of shingles or roof components
- Sound of flapping shingles during wind
- Curled or cracked shingles

Building codes will have different requirements for materials, design and construction of roofs, usually due to the type of weather common to the area. Make sure your roof is up to the right standards before a storm so the chances of damage happening will be less.
