Typically strong windstorms are the main cause of damage. Roofs can usually stand strong winds, but the more severe gusts are, the more likely uplift can occur and loosen or blow off shingles. Then the real problem is with water damage after the roof becomes exposed to the elements. Wind can create missing or torn shingles or fallen limbs that have punctured holes in flashing. Any missing or torn shingles can allow water to get into the plywood decking underneath the shingles and through nail holes.

Or a manufacturer’s defect in shingles may have put too much or not enough adhesive to the shingles so that when they naturally adhere from the heat of day, they don’t properly seal themselves and are able to be lifted up by wind, weakening and eventually breaking them off.
