If a hail storm has recently occurred, check your home for these signs of hail damage:
- Dings in gutters and downspouts
- Shingle indentations
- Many asphalt granules by downspouts
- Missing granules on shingles, may be soft spots
- Dings in flashing, metal vents or stacks
In the U.S. it’s estimated that hail damage accounts for more than a billion dollars in damage to roofs each year.
Check around your home for damage after a storm. Places where you may be able to notice warning signs of hail damage are gutters and downspouts. Siding, gutters, downspouts, metal vents and flashing may also have dings from hail. It’s likely that if these experienced damage, your roof did as well. The extent hail damages a roof can have to do with how long it’s been since the roof has been replaced and its condition before hailing.

Look for granules from asphalt shingles near the downspouts, where they may gather. If there are more than normal, it may be from hail damage knocking granules loose, which could signal further damage. The extent of that is not likely noticeable from the ground. The lifespan of the roof may just have been reduced, or the shingles could be damaged enough that they may not shed water like they should, posing an immediate problem with water damage.
Hail damage doesn’t always show up right away with problems like leaks, but it wears down the roof by knocking off the granules, which protect the shingle and help drain water.
